Welding Engineer / Weld Development Engineer (Plastics / Resin)

The Weld Development Engineer is a member of the Production Engineering team in Farmington Hills, MI supporting MAHLE BU2 North American Plant Locations. The responsibilities of this position include development of next generation resin joining technologies, design for manufacturing development (Resin Joining) of MAHLE BU2 products, supplying support to our BU2 North American facilities with regards to The MAHLE global welding standards and being a process expert for BU2 North American facilities. This position may require travel to the various BU2 NA locations and equipment suppliers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and write equipment specifications, performance requirements, cost analysis, and RFQ for integrating new technology and equipment into the manufacturing process. Once ready to launch in the plant provide production plant with information in a clear standardized manner.
  • Communicate and work with teams, which include engineers, plant associates, quality staff, skilled trades, management.
  • Troubleshoot weld process issues and quality concerns and review all potential contributors to the problem, interpret and analyze problems while providing feasible solutions to our quality staff in the plants.
  • Develop lessons learned and provide to all MAHLE BU2 locations.
  • Perform and understand statistical analysis of data taken from equipment runoffs.
  • Use hand tools (Allen keys, wrenches, pencil grinders, files, etc) to develop new equipment. Also would be needed to understand and use measurement equipment (micrometer, vernier caliper, vernier height gauge, dials indicator, etc. ) to measure parts before and after trials at equipment suppliers.
  • Confers with management, engineering and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, and other considerations to facilitate the manufacturing.
  • Reviews manufacturing strategy on new product quotations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor s degree or higher in Mechanical, Industrial, or related engineering field from an accredited four-year college or university required

  • Tool making certificate or courses is a plus

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant Engineering experience or equivalent role, preferably in the automotive industry experience is required
  • 3
    years of experience in plastic joining processes (Vibration welding, Laser Welding, Hot Plate Welding, IR Welding, etc.) is required; 5-10
    years is preferred
  • Molding experience is required
  • Experience in CAD Design (Catia and/or UG NX) preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret 2D prints and have a good understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Proven planning abilities, including successful execution of such plans
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and solve problems, to work within deadlines with a high attention to detail, and to work independently in a fast paced, dynamic environment
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to influence and develop strong working relationships with colleagues, senior level management and/or executives, vendors, suppliers, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation delivery
  • Must be physically fit, able to manipulate tooling during load/unload to welder or other equipment, able to handle plastic parts (up to 20lbs), work inside small workspaces of the equipment and be able to work on your feet for entire workdays during runoffs and development of equipment
  • Up to 25% travel is required - local and domestic

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
